SPEECH BY HER EXCELLENCY DOROTHY SAMALI HYUHA ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY, MARCH 8, 2025, CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA

Uganda High Commission in Canberra, Australia, led by H.E. Dorothy Samali HYUHA joined the rest of the world to celebrate the International Women’s Day, by hosting Ugandan Ladies living and working in Australia, together with Spouses of Ugandan Diplomats and the Ladies working at Uganda Mission in Canberra, accompanied by their Daughters, to a High Tea function at the Chancery of the High Commission of Uganda.
In her speech, Ambassador HYUHA talked about the origin of International Women’s Day, which was first observed in 1911, as a socialist political event, but has become a global celebration that transcends borders, cultures, and ideologies.
She informed the Ladies that the day was first celebrated in Uganda in 1984 and was made a public holiday in 1991. Amb. Hyuha added that the Mission organised the function to provide a platform for networking and drawing inspiration from one another’s experience, resilience and determination in advancing women’s rights, thereby paving the way for future generations.
She highlighted the remarkable progress in women’s representation in politics and government in Uganda, by mentioning important women personalities like the vice President, the Speaker, the Prime Minister, 14 Cabinet Ministers, Judges etc…
Guests were each given the floor to share their experiences and they did it very well. They thanked the High Commissioner for inviting them. The function that was meant to last only two hours, lasted more than 3hrs due to the friendly interaction that was taking place.
